Hot Springs Origin, Nature and Manifestations

Although Hot Springs can occur outside volcanic areas thanks to the simply underground heating of deep water strings, Hot springs like the ones of Arenal Volcano, are the result of mixing heated underground water, by hot rocks heated by the internal magma of volcano, with cold springs of the rainforest. Despite hot springs in volcanic areas are often at or near the boiling point, fortunately there are some at pleasant temperatures suitable for its exploitation as tourism attraction as well as healthy natural treatment.

Hot Springs Health Benefits

Therapeutic uses of natural hot springs are from internal or external water treatments (hydrotherapy), to medicinal clay (geotherapy). Clay applied as mask on skin, wipe off heat body excess, absorbs toxins and other secretions. Because heated water can hold more dissolved solids, warm and especially hot springs also often have a very high mineral content, containing everything from simple calcium to lithium, and even radium. Because of both the folklore and the proven medical value some of these springs have, they are often popular tourist destinations.

Arenal Volcano Hot Springs

Natural hot springs in Arenal area are an extraordinary gift from the nature and result from the interaction of groundwater with the magma of active Arenal Volcano; so its internal energy and minerals, the same that is emerging from the innards of Earth planet, are capable to give a natural treatment for the human skin as well as the whole body. This provide a way of good conditioning and invigoration, thanks to the healing properties of the pristine hot springs water.

Thermal water from Arenal Volcano Hot Springs are of bicarbonated as well as the chlorated-sulfated types, and both have a cationic composition as a result of the volcanic rock potassium low content of Arenal rocks. Bicarbonated hot springs water has high content of sulfate, calcium, sodium, and low silicon; pH=7 (neutral value in the chemistry acidity scale), and are suitable for digestive system and gastric treatments. Sulfated water has laxative and purge effects.
